King Charles has approved the appointment of the Right Reverend Jan McFarlane as the first-ever female Dean of Lichfield.
Bishop McFarlane, who was ordained 30 years ago at Lichfield Cathedral, will be appointed as Dean on 21 September.
She has been serving as interim dean for over a year since the retirement of the Very Reverend Adrian Dorber in March 2023.
Bishop McFarlane said she was “beyond delighted” after King Charles approved of her appointment this week.
She also said: “It’s a huge honour to be invited to lead us into an adventurous new chapter in the story of Lichfield.”
The Right Reverend Dr Michael Ipgrave also welcomed this appointment and stated that “Her love for the region shines brightly and her love for the things of God brighter still.”
The Conservative candidate for the Lichfield constituency, Sir David Fabricant, stated: “She brings an enthusiastic freshness to the job and will build on the work and modernisation programme of the previous Dean.”
