Sensasian, the South Asian arts festival, starts today (9 July) at the New Vic in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The festival kicks off tonight with a night of comedy, with the rest of the week being dedicated to dance, music, and family fun.
Val Bansal, who organised the festival, stated that the festival aims to encourage more Asian people to visit the theatre in North Staffordshire.
“I’ve been to some plays and thought, ‘I’m the only Asian person here!'” he stated.
Tonight’s event starts at 7.30pm and costs £15.00, with concession tickets available for £13.00. Comedians Nabil Abdulrashid, Tommy Sandhu Sukh Ojla, and Raj Poojara will take to the stage.
Tomorrow (10 July) will see the Sonia Sabri Company performing Roshni, a lively show featuring music from Spain, India, and Persia. “It’s global music and that’s a real speciality of our show,” said Ms Sabri. Taking place also at the New Vic, this performance will cost £15.00 (£10.00 concessions).
Friday (12 July) will see Britain’s Got Talent star Ben Hart take to the stage to perform his award-winning magic and explore his Indian heritage. Tickets for this event cost £15.00 (£13.00).
Saturday (13 July) is the day of the main event – the Sensasian Family Fun Day. This event is free and includes such family-friendly activities as henna painting, film screenings, live performances, and Bhangra workshops.
Neena’s, the traditional Indian catering company, will be serving home-cooked Indian food for lunch.
