Waste deliveries at Walleys Quarry, Newcastle-under-Lyme, resumed on Wednesday (7 August) following the huge fire that shut down the landfill on Sunday night.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service remained on site until Tuesday (6 August) to ensure that the fire was safely extinguished.
The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed. However, no one was hurt during the blaze and the landfill’s infrastructure remains intact. No damage was caused to the gas extraction system or any other pieces of equipment.
The fire spread through an area of waste that measured roughly 25 cubic metres. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
A spokesperson for the quarry stated: “We also acknowledge that this will have been disruptive for the community around Walleys Quarry and we apologise for this along with thanking residents for their understanding.”
Walleys Quarry has received numerous complaints over the years in relation to the smell it emits. When the fire started on Sunday night, some local residents celebrated.
