A maneless zebra was born at Peak Wildlife in Leek on Tuesday (18 June). It is believed that this is the first time a zebra has been born maneless in the UK.

The maneless zebra subspecies is classed as highly endangered and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’ red list. There are only around 40 maneless zebras currently in captivity.

The onsite vet team have been monitoring the newborn and its mother, Zara, closely over the last few days. Both animals are reportedly doing well.

Peak Wildlife’s head keeper Yaz Walker stated: “We are overjoyed to welcome this zebra foal into the Peak family.”

She continued: “This birth is a testament to our dedicated efforts in conservation and our ongoing commitment to the care and preservation of endangered species.”
