A total of 1,076 people have signed a petition that demands Staffordshire County Council to carry out structural repair on the A519 between Cotes Heath and Mill Meece.
The petition states that potholes have left the road in a dangerous condition and that continuous heavy traffic is making the road worse.
It also states that urgent structural repair work needs to be carried out within the next six months.
While the road has received repair work in the past, the campaigners argue that this has only provided temporary relief.
The petition, which was organised by Sue Bell, has now been presented to the Staffordshire County Council leader Alan White.
One of the campaigners stated: “The petition has 1,074 signatures collected over a short period and, from the almost universal support it received, there would have been no difficulty finding many more times that number of signatories if they’d been required.”
They continued: “Although there was discussion of the situation at the presentation between those present, Councillor White agreed to send us a written response to the petition, which we await. We have also had a very positive discussion with and enthusiastic support from our local Eccleshall Division county councillor, Jeremy Pert, who is likewise concerned to resolve the road situation.”
In response to the petition, James Bailey, the council’s assistant director for highways, stated: “The A519 on this section has been identified as a road which will be considered for full structural replacement from Cotes Heath to Slindon over the next few years and prioritised along with other schemes. We anticipate an investment of around £3.4million.”
