Staffordshire Police are appealing for information after what they are describing as a ‘deliberate’ fire ripped through a block of council flats in Meir early this morning (May 3). The incident occurred on Meir’s Beveridge Close, behind Tawney Crescent.
The alarm was raised at 3:30am and police arrived at the scene at 3:45am. Residents of the affected properties were all safely evacuated and the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue services extinguished the blaze at 6.45am. No injuries were sustained.
One witness reported hearing a “massive bang” at 3.30am. They then noticed that the outside “bin area was on fire”. The fire was then reported to have spread to the “shed, guttering, and hedges”.
The cause of the blaze remains unknown. Police are still on the scene and have taped off the affected area for further investigation. It also remains unclear when it will be safe for tenants to reenter the buildings.
If you have any information regarding the incident, contact the police on 101 and quote incident 73 of 3 May.
