Dan Bigham, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, was part of the men’s GB Track Cycling team that took home silver last night (7 August) following the 4,000m race.
The GB team gave the race everything they could but were beaten by the world record holders Australia by a mere two seconds.
Besides Bigham, the GB side consisted of Ethan Vernon, Charlie Tanfield, and Ethan Hayter.
Despite missing out on gold, for Bigham to leave Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome last night with silver during his first-ever Olympics appearance is a great achievement.
This silver medal will join Bigham’s list of other achievements, which includes being the 2022 men’s team pursuit world champion and his silver medal for individual pursuit at the 2023 World Championships. Bigham has also previously broken the UCI Hour Record.
He joins the list of Staffordshire athletes who are leaving the Paris Olympics having won a medal. This list includes Adam Burgess, Joe Clarke, Adam Peaty, and Sophie Capewell.
Cabinet Member for Communities at Staffordshire County Council Victoria Wilson stated: “We clearly have some amazing sporting talent right across the county and that was a brave performance by Dan.”
She continued: “He’s a super athlete and has proved it over numerous years and competitions now. I think I can speak for everyone in Staffordshire when I say that we are incredibly proud of all our Olympians. Well done all.”
