Staffordshire County Council have proposed that Stone’s High Street vehicle ban hours should be extended.
This comes after members of Stone Town Council proposed that hours need to be extended due to safety concerns.
The High Street is currently a pedestrian-only zone from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The new proposal would see this being extended to 4.30pm.
Councillor Jill Hood stated that this extra half hour would “give all the schoolchildren time to clear the street.”
Cars are allowed to drive on the High Street in the morning and at night in order to allow traders to load and unload goods.
However, Stone Town Council have previously expressed that the current schedule poses a safety risk, especially amongst town visitors who may be unaware that the High Street is pedestrianised during the day.
Should the pedestrian-only extension go ahead, new signs will be put up to reflect the changed hours.
