A former pub in Chesterton is set to become a One Stop local food store.
The Grove House in Chesterton was a double-fronted pub located on London Road. Surrounded by residential areas, the bar had been well supported by the local community up until its closure in 2023.
Since its closure, a change of use planning application was submitted and approved by Newcastle Borough Council. Now, an advertisement consent application is awaiting approval. This will allow the developers to add One Stop signage to the premises.
The planning application states: “The store will function as a small, local food store helping meet the day-to-day needs of local residents, comprising a local walk-in catchment population and a limited amount of pass-by trade.”
It continues: “The store is expected to carry a basic range of groceries, ready meals, sandwiches and snacks, beers, wines and spirits and a range of fresh fruit and vegetables.”
The new shop is expected to employ around five people. Part-time and full-time opportunities will be available, as will work for retirees and young adults.
An opening date for the new shop has not yet been provided.
