Staffordshire Police and the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have spent the last three days searching for a ‘human hand’ in the Trent and Mersey Canal.

A fisherman reported that they had discovered human remains on Friday night (21 June) while fishing in the canal. Police were called to the scene, located off Vernon Road in Stoke, at 7.15pm.

Pictures emerged over the weekend of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service searching the canal in a boat.

A spokesperson from Staffordshire Police stated: “Emergency services have been searching a canal in Stoke-on-Trent over the weekend after reports of a human hand being discovered by a fisherman.”

They continued: “We got a call saying that a man had caught a piece of fabric in the canal. It was then reported what was believed to be a hand fell out of the fabric and back into the water.”

Search teams carried out a thorough search of the canal over the weekend. However, nothing was found and the police have since called off the search.
