Newts living on the site of the forthcoming Chatterley Park industrial estate will be moved to a new purpose-built home located on farmland in Chatterley Valley.
Great crested newts, a native species protected by law, are officially classed as being endangered, with numbers decreasing in recent years.
They currently live on the site that will soon be transformed into the 108-acre Chatterley Park industrial estate.
It is a legal requirement for developers must put in place mitigations for law-protected animals that will be affected by building work.
Developers of the industrial estate, Harworth Estates Investments, submitted a proposal for a newt reserve to be created on nearby farmland. Newcastle Borough Council approved these plans.
The reserve, which will be located near Peacock Hay Road, will feature log piles and multiple ponds.
