Staffordshire Police are appealing for information to help them ID those involved in the far-right disorder that occurred in Tamworth last night (4 August).
Anti-immigration protestors descended on the Holiday Inn Express Hotel ostensibly to protest peacefully. The hotel was targeted due to the fact it is currently being used to house refugees.
Staffordshire Police proactively deployed a wide-scale policing operation – which included members of neighbouring police forces – to the scene due to the hostility of the crowd. It was clear early on that the mob intended to damage the property.
As the police stood protecting the hotel, they were violently attacked by members of the mob. Petrol bombs were thrown and fireworks were launched in their direction. One police officer was left with a broken arm.
Some degree of damage was caused to the hotel but thankfully no one inside was harmed.
The police were able to quickly disperse the crowds and restore peace in the area. Members of the Tamworth Local Policing Team patrolled the area overnight.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Ellison stated: “The senseless violence and acts of despicable thuggery in Tamworth tonight are completely inexcusable. The local community do not deserve to be subject to this behaviour, and neither do the brave officers putting themselves in harm’s way to keep everyone safe.”
He continued: “We will be using footage from CCTV, air support and our officers’ body-worn video devices to identify those responsible and seek the toughest possible punishment for these acts of senseless violence.”
The incident last night follows several anti-immigration clashes that occurred throughout the country over the weekend. This included a protest in Stoke-on-Trent on Saturday (3 August).
These violent protests are being carried out in response to the fatal stabbing of three children that occurred in Southport last week. It is wrongly believed that these attacks were perpetrated by a refugee.
Anyone who can provide any information related to the incident that occurred on Sunday night should contact Staffordshire Police immediately.
