Hanley Commendation The Smiler

Firefighters who rescued injured passengers from Alton Towers rollercoaster The Smiler have received top awards at a ceremony attended by victims.

Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford presented certificates of commendation to the 25 crew members who dealt with the theme park horror on June 2.

Education Nepal student exchange in Staffordshire

Teenagers from Nepal are being housed in the Staffordshire Moorlands as part of an exchange trip with Endon High School in Stoke-on-Trent.

The pupils, from Kuleshwa Secondary School in Kathmandhu, are living with families of year 10 and year 11 students from Endon.


A film about the fabled chained oak tree of Alton in Staffordshire will premiere in the neighbouring town of Cheadle.

The Legend of the Chained Oak will have its first screenings on Saturday April 19 at Cheadle’s Discovery & Visitor Centre.


Alton Towers in Staffordshire has received more than 2,000 applications for 1,200 seasonal jobs.

The theme park, which opens again next Spring, is one of the largest employers in the area, providing around 3,000 jobs.

The Smiler roller coaster at Alton Towers has re-opened five days after it was closed following an incident which injured two riders.

The £18 million ride was closed when small plastic guide wheels flew off and hit front row riders in the face.
