Former Stoke-on-Trent councillor Andrew Lilley has been jailed for 16 months after taking £10,000 from a Labour Party constituency accounts.

Lilley, of Leek Road, Carmountside, was treasurer of Stoke Central Constituency Labour Party – the seat of Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt – between 2004 and 2012.

Campaigners fighting to save Fenton Town Hall have taken a local petition to 10 Downing Street in a bid to save the historic building.

The petition, which has 10,000 signatures, calls for the government to prevent the Ministry of Justice from selling the hall.

A hard-hitting report into patient care at Stafford Hospital brands the scandal as “a damning indictment of NHS attitudes, practices and organisations”.

Robert Francis QC, who compiled the report, has made almost 300 recommendations, which he said today were designed to make sure patient interests were top priority.
