Cheshire’s FIRST ‘everything under £1’ shop is now open and here’s an honest review

A new discount shop, from the original owners of Poundworld, has opened opened in Crewe town centre this week.

‘One Below’ which opened on Friday is located at same unit where Poundworld used to be in the Market Centre.

It will be the first shop of the new brand to open in Cheshire.

At recent grand openings in many locations around the UK, the new brand is resisting current retail trends and has been attracting hundreds of customers eagerly waiting for the doors to open.

‘One Below’ is the first discount store in the UK to sell everything for under a pound, including a large range of well-known brands such as Cadbury’s, Kelloggs, Coca Cola, Heinz and many more.

Many workers who lost their jobs when Poundworld went into administration in 2018 have been given new employment at the new store.

The retailer sells over 5,000 products with prices starting from as little as 29p spanning over 10 departments including groceries, home, health and beauty, baby care, toys, DIY, partyware, craft and gardening.

For people on a budget, One Below provides a ‘no nonsense approach to shopping, offering extreme value and a fresh shopping experience.’

We took a trip to the opening day of the new store to give you an honest review:

From Zoflora to hemorrhoid cream to beard oil and back scratcher’s this kind of budget retail stocks a whole heap of random things that may or may not be useful to everyday life.

But I personally can’t help but feel a little underwhelmed by this particular store. Don’t get me wrong I love a good bargain and actively seek out bargains where I can so I was expecting some amazing things that would be better value than any of the other pound, discount or supermarket stores out there.

But I really failed to find one item that really was worth its weight in gold other than a few food items and a mini set of draws, which I could of got from other shops at the same price.

From a consumer point of view I can see how opening a store like this would be beneficial to the high street as it will attract customers. But customers that are looking for prices that are cheaper than everywhere else.

Are the items that these discount stores are selling really good value for money, or even worth the bus fare or petrol to commute to them? I’ll leave you to decide.

I do believe it is a good thing for Crewe in particular though as it’s the first new shop to be opened in the town centre for a while and has created a number of jobs and upon visiting the shop on Friday it was full of people filling baskets.

With plans to take the new brand national by opening 50 stores this year, the company will create many jobs across the country for the struggling UK retail industry. Hopefully reviving empty retail units, like the one in Crewe, on high streets throughout the country.

The new brand is being financed independently and launched by father and son businessmen, Christopher Edwards and Christopher Edwards Senior- who were the original founders of high street retailer Poundworld before it was sold to American equity conglomerate TGP Capital 2014.

They said: “We’re delighted to be back with the opening of our new store in Crewe- it’s a  great location.

“One Below is the only name on the high street offering everything it sells for £1 or less with branded, quality products costing as little as 29p.

“we look forward to helping local shoppers save on a variety of their favourite products.”
