A 33-year-old pregnant woman has been jailed for nine months for administering a poisonous or noxious substance with intent to harm.

Laura Hopkin, 33, of Westwood Road, Meir was jailed at Stoke-on-Trent Crown court today after giving her type 1 diabetic ex-boyfriend an overdose of insulin.

The court heard how the couple had arguments that day and she had drank three bottles of wine when she delivered the drug.

Her ex-partner was lying in bed reading a book when he found Hopkin holding an insulin bluetooth device pump in her hand, the court heard.

The victim was able to disconnect the device when he realised and was admitted to hospital overnight before being discharged the next day.

Cathryn Orchard, prosecuting, said: “It was a plainly deliberate act clearly aggravated by alcohol.

“He was very shocked and concerned this happened. If he fell asleep he would be unknown to what she had done.”

Catherine O’Reilly, defending, said: “She has a guilty plea and her intention was to not cause serious harm.

“She acted completely out of character, she has no previous convictions.

“It has taken some time for her to accept what she has done.

“The relationship had clearly faulted and she had a bad reaction to that stating ‘she wanted to make him need her.’”

Hopkin told the court she knew her relationship would fail with her then boyfriend.

The 33-year-old is now in a new relationship and is pregnant.

The court heard how the ex-boyfriend’s reputation has been ruined as he has been shunned for lying.

Judge Paul Glenn said: “You’re 33 years old and have never been in trouble with the police.

“You eventually pleaded guilty at trial, the delay has been down to you. What you did was wicked, you were well aware of his condition.

“When interviewed by police you lied again and again. It could have had a catastrophic effect on his health.

Hopkin was given a nine-month prison sentence, a suspended sentence for 13 months, and 120 hours of unpaid work.
