Kidsgrove Athletic winger Tom France says he is considering an early retirement from football after suffering his second ACL rupture in just over a year.
The player told StaffsLive that he has a big decision to make about returning to football.
When asked about retirement, France said: “It has crossed my mind because I have to look at the bigger picture.
“I’ve got a house, I’ve got a job which requires me to be on my feet all the time sports coaching and I have just got to weigh it up to see if it will be worth it.
“But on the flip side of that if I don’t get it done then for me there’s always going to be a mental thing. There’s going to be a weakness there so it could just give way again.
“So, it is something I’m definitely going to have to think about whether to play when I come back from this one.
“But for now, I’m just focused on just getting myself right, just enjoying Christmas and we can tackle it after then and just get my head into it really.”
France sustained an ACL rupture during Kidsgrove’s away game at Skelmersdale United last Saturday following an aerial battle.
He added that Kidsgrove manager and former Burton Albion defender Ryan Austin – who also had problems with his ACL during his career – reached out to offer support.
France said: “Everyone at the club has been fantastic, I’ve had calls from Mick, Coops, the gaffer and obviously it’s not a good thing but I can bounce things off the gaffer and see where he was at during different stages and not compare because of course everyone’s different but see where he was at.
“But this one is going to be a tough one, mentally more than anything I think. Obviously, I’ve done my left knee, now I’ve done my right.”
Ryan Austin was ruled out of the 2009/10 season with Burton Albion through the same injury shortly after making his Football League debut.
Austin says he understands why Tom is considering retirement: “I was probably luckier in the position I was with a pro club. I had a contract.
“Whereas Tom is different, he doesn’t have a contract so financially he’s not going to be in the same situation so he will have to give in a lot of thought because the likelihood is that he’s going to miss some of his day job.
“So he’s got to look at the financial implications and you’ve got to do what’s best for yourself.”
Kidsgrove welcome Ramsbottom United to the Novus Stadium this Saturday. Kick off 3pm.
