This weekend sees eighth tier Kidsgrove Athletic travel to National League side Hartlepool United in a bid to make FA Cup history and striker Ant Malbon is motivated for the challenge ahead.
It is only the second time in the Kidsgrove’s 66-year history where they have made it to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup and a win would make this team the first Kidsgrove side ever to feature in the first round proper.
Star striker Malbon believes this Kidsgrove side are capable of pulling off a shock victory in what will be the biggest game of his career.
“It’s going to be a massive game, ” he said. “Going to Hartlepool away for some of these players is great because they have never had the chance to play at this standard before.
“The chance to play in front of a couple of thousand fans is great. If that doesn’t get you motivated, I don’t know what will.
“It’s good for the area and the local community too. They can come out and back us and from what I hear they will be.”
Saturday’s visit to Hartlepool has dominated the club’s plans this week with their last two league games being postponed to give the club the best chance possible to get a victory.
The striker added: “It’s great that we’ve had a week off so we can actually prepare for one team on the Saturday.
“We’ll travel up on the Friday night so we’ll treat it like a pro club and hopefully we can play like one on Saturday and pull off a shock.”
Malbon also believes Saturday’s match will be the biggest achievement of his career so far.
“In my opinion, it will be the best thing I’ve done in my football career.
“I’ve tried to stay here and get as high as we can so for me personally and for what I have achieved I think it will be the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Kidsgrove play Hartlepool this Saturday with a place in the first-round proper at stake with kick off at 15:00.
