Alton Towers announce world’s first wood and fire rollercoaster

Alton Towers have unveiled details of their latest attraction ‘Wicker Man’, due to open this year.

Wicker Man will be the world’s first rollercoaster that combines wood and fire, with a giant ‘flaming’ structure of a man standing at 57ft tall.

The Staffordshire resort has invested £16 million into the creation, which is a nod to wooden rollercoasters seen in the late 1800’s.

Bradley Wynne, Creative Lead at Alton Towers, said: “We are delighted to finally be announcing Wicker Man as the latest ground-breaking thrill attraction from Alton Towers Resort.

“Guests will be ‘chosen’ to take part in a celebratory ‘rite of passage’ as they race through the flaming Wicker Man.

“We hope visitors will be blown away by Wicker Man’s breath-taking scale, whilst the primal essence of the wooden coaster and astonishing effects will leave them delighted, exhilarated and eager to ride again.”

The project has been in development for over four years and is formally known as ‘SW8’ (Secret Weapon 8), a code name given to the resort’s big attractions.

Over 1,000 people have worked on the project, including the world’s leading creators of wooden rollercoasters, Great Coasters International.

Alton Towers explained their decision to opt for a wooden rollercoaster as opposed to a steel one.

A spokesperson, said: “We’ve got lots of fantastic steel coasters but we’ve never had a ‘woody’, so it’s a great addition to Alton Towers Resort.

“And of course, with the introduction of fire and the Wicker Man theme this really will be a wooden rollercoaster like no other.”

The ride is due to open in Spring 2018.
