A man has been jailed for trying to snatch a 65-year-old woman’s handbag as she walked her granddaughter back from childcare in Wolstanton.
Christopher Ollerhead, 30, of no fixed address, rode at his victim on his bicycle near Wolstanton High School in Newcastle-under-Lyme and went to grab her handbag and ride away, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard.
However, he missed and fell on top of the lady.
Ollerhead and his victim grappled to pull the bag before he gave up and rode away.
The court heard Ollerhead was doing it to fund a drug addiction he has had since a young age.
Clare Thomas, prosecuting, said: “The incident has clearly left her feeling shaken and anxious about walking outside with her handbag.”
Ollerhead has 35 previous convictions, including supplying class A drugs and shoplifting.
Barry White, defending, said: “All of his crimes relate to drugs, and speaking to him has shown me he really wants help with his drug problem.
“He did not target the woman and puts it down to spur of the moment.
“It is a low level attempted robbery.”
Judge D Fletcher, hearing the case, said: “You are no stranger to the court system.
“Your intention was clearly to snatch the handbag, however you ended up in a push and pull battle with this lady.”
Ollerhead was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, as well as a two-month consecutive sentence for shoplifting.
