Macclesfield Town are just one game away from a trip to Wembley after a 1-1 home draw with Tranmere Rovers in the Buildbase FA Trophy semi-final,
Tranmere went ahead inside two minutes after the away side were awarded a controversial penalty, which was then tucked away by Jeff Hughes.
The Silkmen then appeared to score moments later, as the ball looked to have crossed the line after Steven McNulty headed the ball towards his own net, but the linesman ruled no goal.
Macclesfield started to dominate and had chances fall to Kingsley James and Ollie Norburn but they weren’t able to equalise.
The home side then got a deserved goal through Norburn, 11 minutes into the second half after Tranmere goalkeeper Scott Davies came to meet a long ball before a pass took him out of the game, allowing Norburn to finish at an empty net.
John Askey’s men had chances to take the lead, and could have done with another goal to take to Tranmere.
After the game, Askey said: “I’m not happy because of the way that it came about, but it’s all still to play for so we have got to go and do it again, but I thought we deserved to win today.
“We’ve got every chance of reaching Wembley, and no matter what is thrown at us we’ve just got to roll our sleeves up and have a go and see where it takes us,” he told the club website.
Macclesfield named an unchanged side from the quarter-final win over Dulwich Hamlet, but there was a place on the bench for striker Anthony Dudley.
Askey said: “Anthony coming back in helps us with the amount of games that are coming up from now until the end of the season. We still need more players but we’re in a better position squad wise than we have been in previous years. “
The return leg will take place at Prenton Park on Saturday, March 18 at 15:00. The winners of the tie will go on to face Lincoln City or York City.
