Stoke City’s Joe Allen included in UEFA’s 40-man shortlist for Team of the Year

Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen has been included in UEFA’s 40-man shortlist for the 2016 Team of the Year.

The Welsh international has been in fine form this season, and has been listed alongside Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and fellow countryman Gareth Bale.

Allen has been recognised for his impressive performances under Mark Hughes following his summer move from Liverpool – which has seen him flourish in a more attacking role.

Angela Smith, chair of Stoke City’s supporters council, said: “We are delighted that Joe Allen has been selected for the shortlist.

“We hope he makes the team, and we hope he continues to show the same great form when playing for Stoke City.”

This season the 26-year-old Potters star has found the net four times and provided three assists, but will miss this weekend’s trip to Watford having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season on Saturday, November 19.

Having also flourished for Wales during the summer at the European Championships in France, who reached the semi-final, Allen was included in the team of the tournament.
