Cricket: Staffordshire seek to continue unbeaten start

Staffordshire will be looking to continue their winning start to the new cricket season this Sunday.

The minor county won their opening competitive match against Cheshire comfortably.

Now Staffordshire go into this Sunday’s 50-over Unicorns Trophy match  seeking to make it six wins from six matches this season, after four pre-season victories.

They face Herefordshire at Himley this Sunday, though Staffs batsman Peter Wilshaw say Staffs have succeeded by focusing on themselves, rather than the opposition.

Wilshaw hit 110, including five sixes, in the win over Cheshire to provide an ideal start to the new season.

Though Staffs have started promisingly in limited-overs cricket, there is also the longer format of the game to consider.

Staffordshire won the Minor Counties Championship in 2014 but had a poor campaign last summer, though Wilshaw believes they have the ability to improve this time.

Staffordshire’s Minor Counties Championship fixtures don’t start until June, so focus now remains on  qualifying for the Unicorns Trophy semi-finals.
