Man arrested in Staffordshire Moorlands abattoir probe

A man has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty at a Staffordshire Moorlands abattoir.

The 34-year-old was arrested on Thursday, February 19, as part of the joint investigation by police and the Food Standards Agency into a slaughterhouse owned by Bagshaw and Sons in Butterton, near Leek, Staffordshire Police said.

Video secretly filmed by Hillside Animal Sanctuary and released in early February appeared to show pigs, cows and sheep being kicked and screaming in agony.

Some of the animals in the video also appear not to have been properly stunned.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “The slaughter licences of two people continue to be suspended and a notice prohibiting further processing at the site is still in force whilst the investigation progresses”

The man has been bailed pending further enquiries.
