Shocked neighbours said today a mum and two children found dead in a Stoke-on-Trent house were a Polish family.
The woman and young children, who have not been named, were found in a house on Sherwin Road, Burslem, after neighbours heard screams.
Police discovered the bodies at about 6.30pm last night (October 12). Reports suggest they were stabbed, but this has not been confirmed by police.
It’s thought one of the children was just 18 months old, the other of primary school age.
The road and nearby Thornley Road remain cordoned off today by police as investigations.
Staff at nearby St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School said they would be holding “prayers’ for the family.
Dianne Mason, executive headteacher of St Wilfred’s and St. Peter’s Catholic school, said: “All we know is that there was in incident within the community but we don’t know anymore about it at the moment.
“We are saying prayers. We are working with agencies involved but at the moment we are very much in the dark. That’s all we have got to say.”
Stunned neighbours spoke of their shock at the deaths, and said the woman had not lived there long and kept herself to herself.
Amy Rome, who lives on Sherwin Road, said: “There were police everywhere, neighbours were outside and told us, we are all very shocked.
“You just don’t expect it to happen, we thought the road closure was for an accident.”
Local uniformed police and community support officers remain at the scene today (October 13) supporting the detectives and forensics teams in their work.
Chief Supt Martin Evans, from Staffordshire Police, said: “We understand the local community are both shocked and saddened by this tragic incident.
“We recognise the community’s need for information, however it is important not to speculate and let our detectives conduct their detailed investigation to establish the full facts.
“Local officers will maintain a visible presence in our community to support the investigation and the local community affected.”
A police spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6.35pm of an incident at the address.
“Tragically, a woman and two young children were pronounced dead at the scene.
“A man was arrested at the scene.
“Police have started a detailed investigation and whilst we understand residents may be concerned, we would ask that people do not to speculate while we establish the facts.”
Thornley Road, just around the corner from Sherwin Road, has been cordoned off by police at its junction with Greenbank Road.
