Hollyoaks star Rachel Shenton is set to take part in a gruelling race to raise money for a Staffordshire charity.
The Stoke-on-Trent born actress, who plays Mitzeee McQueen in the Channel 4 soap opera, will be running 10 kilometres in darkness as she competes in Scotland’s Mighty Deerstalker Challenge in aid of the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice Trust.
The 27-year-old, originally from Blythe Bridge, said said she had visited the Trentham-based hospice and was overwhelmed by the work done there to help support children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
Rachel, whose on-screen character is known as a pampered diva, has been preparing for the race with personal trainer Jim Williamson of the Evolve gym in Fenton.
The bruising 10K cross-country race features water obstacles, hazardous drops and is in run completely in pitch darkness.
Rachel, who has tackled challenges ranging from sky dives to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania for other charities, said: “I do a lot of training anyway.
“Some of the hours we had on set could be pretty gruelling so I’d like to think it won’t be as hard as that.
“I really wanted to support Jim and the rest of the Evolve team.
“They’ll be doing 12 challenges over the year all for the Donna Louise Trust.
“There’s nothing else like it in our area and they rely on public donations – it’s just so important to raise money for it.”
Donna Louise Trust director of fundraising Melanie Williams said: “We wish Rachel all the best of luck with the event.
“As a charity, we need to raise £2.5 million each year to provide care and support to 200 life-threatened children and their families.
“Support from our celebrity champions is vital in helping us to achieve our fundraising target.”
