More than 8,000 people turned up to the Trentham Gardens Christmas lights switch-on to kickstart the festive season.

People across Staffordshire joined Santa and Mrs Claus in the countdown to Christmas.

A parade of Santas, fire jugglers, samba dancers, drummers and other performers took place throughout the village leading to the finale at the main stage.

Emma James, a member of the fire jugglers, said: “It’s the first time I’ve performed in Trentham, I couldn’t believe how busy it was.

“It was a bit scary at times with the fire, but it was great, everyone seemed very welcoming and I think this parade was the best way to kick off the countdown to Christmas.”

Signal Radio led the stage-based event introducing local duet Amica, rappers Benj and Benji, and up-and-coming girl group Vanquish.

Members of Amica, 18-year-olds Rachel Sawkins and Jack Eagles, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, said: “The more people that turned up made it a really good experience.

“It’s been amazing performing at an event like this, it’s good doing it with your best friend and there’s not many duos out there so we thought we’d give it a go.”

Girl group Vanquish, who performed new singles “Machine” and “Damn”, expressed their delight at the Trentham Gardens event.

“We would definitely perform at Trentham again,” they told StaffsLive.

“It was such a good crowd even though it started raining as soon as we got on stage.

“Lisa-Ann is from Stoke-on-Trent, and she relished the opportunity to come back home and perform here.”

Residents were very impressed with this year’s festivities, commending the work by Trentham Gardens.

Santa and Mrs Claus ended the evening by turning on the lights in the village and beginning the fireworks display.

Karen Eccleston, a mum from Trentham, said: “We’ve been coming about three or four years now so we make it a bit of a tradition.

“The atmosphere is always brilliant, and I really enjoyed the parade which was new this year.

“The kids have absolutely adored it, we’ll be here next year without a doubt.”

Santa and Mrs Claus will continue to be present at the attraction every weekend until Christmas Eve.
