A new production of Rutherford & Son is coming to the New Vic Theatre.
Former Coronation Street actresses Wendi Peters and Kate Anthony will star in the show, which runs from March 12 to 16.
Sir Jonathan miller will direct the production and said he was keen to showcase a piece of theatre in a traditional way.
“It’s very natural, very simple, straightforward,” he explained. “There are no temptations to engage in fashionable concepts.
“It’s just a straightforward account of a family living in a time of recession.”
Written in 1912 by Gither Sowerby, Rutherford & Son is a dark drama that tells the story of an industrial family in the north east of England and the problems arising from a patriarch who puts his family owned glass works company before his family, and values success above all else.
Former soap star Wendi Peters, said: “It’s a lovely play which deals with social and class issues and gender politics.
“It’s something different and amazing that in 1905 a woman was writing a play like this. I’ll be researching that era and the social issues involved.”
