Port Vale Chief Executive hoping for rousing England women’s friendly welcome

Port Vale chief executive Colin Garlick hopes the club can encourage the England’s senior women’s team to use their facilities again in the future.

Vale Park will host the Lionesses’ international friendly against Italy on April 7 (7:45pm kick-off) as part of their preparations for UEFA Euro 2017.

The side that Mark Sampson fields in Burslem will include the same players that travel to this summer’s tournament in the Netherlands, the boss naming his 23-strong squad on Monday although the finals do not start until July.

Garlick said: “The women’s game is very much on the up and up, and the Lionesses are doing very well within world football.

“For us to have what is an important game in their pre-tournament build-up is fantastic news for us.

“They’ve obviously got quality opposition in the form of Italy, so it is a big international for us. We’re delighted and proud to be hosting it.”

The League One club are hopeful that a strong crowd will prove to the FA that they are worthy of also hosting further events.

“We’re expecting people from far and wide. But those from the region have got the best opportunity because we can get the best part of 20,000 in here,” continued Garlick.

“I don’t think we’re going to have that sort of a crowd. But I’d like the numbers that we’ve got already to generate a really good atmosphere.

“In this final week of preparation, we really want to make it a focus to everybody that we’ve got this game. It’s a prestigious game and they’re going to see something different at Vale Park.”

Garlick, who ended an 11-year spell at Rochdale to join Vale in October last year, said: “If we can give England a good welcome here there’s a good chance that the FA will bring these games back to us in the future.

“That’s really why we want the local people to get behind the game and give them a good Vale Park welcome. We’re very much looking to put on a show for them.

“To have the game is really important for us. I want to make sure that they enjoy it so much that when they’ve got games to bring to the North Midlands, we’re the first name on the sheet.

“We want to make sure that we deliver. We’re working hard with the staff at the FA to make sure the event is a success.”
