By Gareth Samuel: One Direction foiled Adele’s domination of the 2012 Brit Awards by winning the coveted Best British Single at London’s O2 Arena.

The award delighted the chart-toppers who include Staffordshire-born Liam Payne (pictured) and Harry Styles, from Holmes Chapel.

They were ecstatic at receiving the gong for their 2011 single, “What makes you beautiful”.

Adele cemented her place as one of the biggest recording artists in the world by winning Best Female Solo Artist and the Best British Album awards.

Ed Sheeran picked up two awards, including Best Make Solo Artist and Coldplay won the Best British Group, their sixth Brit Award.

There were numerous performances from artists such as Adele, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Blur, who won an Outstanding Contribution to Music award.
