By Matthew Payne & Joseph Blake: The Government has given Stoke-on-Trent City Council money to help people cope with the cold weather this winter.

The local authority has received £240,000 to help reduce cold housing for the most vulnerable people in the area.

The council are currently working with North Staffordshire Warm Zone to target at risk groups and provide information on how to keep warm via the Beat The Cold scheme.

Recent analysis has shown that  70 percent of pensioners in Stoke-on-Trent are in fuel poverty.

Gwen Hassall, cabinet member for housing and neighbourhoods, said: “It is a hugely important step in making sure we protect our communities and make Stoke-on-Trent a great place to live.”

Martin Chadwick from the Beat The Cold campaign added: “There is a lot of help available this winter for the people in Stoke-on-Trent.

“The campaign also offers crisis repairs, so if peoples health is at risk and they have lost their heating and hot water they will get a speedier repair.”
