By Edmund Crosthwaite: A Staffordshire University blogger has spoken of his surprise at being nominated for a national award.

Sports Journalism student Barry Landy, author of Down in the Box, has been nominated in the Best Young Blogger category of the Not 100% Awards for Football Bloggers.

He will be up against four other young bloggers with the winner being chosen by a panel of judges and announced at an awards ceremony next month.

Barry, 23, is also competing against nominees in seven other categories for the People’s Choice Award, where the winner is chosen by a public vote.

Speaking after the shortlists were announced, Barry said he was flattered to receive the nomination.

He said: “I was absolutely stunned, because by my own admission I don’t update the blog as often as I’d like to.”

Barry, originally from Ireland, began writing after his national side were involved in a controversial football match in 2009.

“I started using a social networking app after Ireland were knocked out of the World Cup qualifiers by France,” he said.

“Thierry Henry handled the ball and I was a bit upset and had a lot of things to say.”

Now Barry has his own dedicated website and covers football in general, as well as specialising in the Republic of Ireland’s national sides.

Barry admitted: “It’s tough when you’re writing a general football blog, because there are a lot of them out there, but because I’m based in England, writing about Irish football helps me stand out a little more.”
