Stoke-on-Trent boxer defends British flyweight title
By Ann-Marie Keegan: Longton-based boxer Chris Edwards beat Shinny Bayaar on a unanimous points decision to successfully defend his British flyweight title at the Peterlee Leisure Centre.
The win was Edwards’ 17th win of his professional career, and came against an old foe who had previously taken the belt from Edwards two years ago.
Thirty-five year old Edwards began the fight at a fast pace which southpaw Bayaar struggled to deal with. An accidental head clash in the early rounds resulted in a cut to Bayaar’s eye.
Edwards also dominated the middle rounds of the fight, pressurising Bayaar into making several tactical mistakes.
Bayaar mounted a late comback towards the end of the fight as Edwards began to feel effects of the early pace he had set.
Bayaar managed to take a few points in the latter stages but Stoke favourite Edwards held out until the final bell to retain the Lonsdale belt.
